CALGARY, AB – As the number of COVID-19 outbreaks at meat processing facilities increase across Alberta and western Canada, officials warn this could impact the health of Canadians.
Beef and pork processing plants shutting down to stop the spread of the virus will have significant effects on the supply of meat products.
This will likely result in shortages and empty shelves at grocery stores across the country and lead to irrational buying behaviour.
“If we’re not careful, Albertans may temporarily experience positive health benefits from reduced consumption of red meat,” warned Premier Jason Kenney.
Alberta processing facilities are some of the worst hit in the country and Alberta is also the source of a large proportion of Canadian beef products.
“The global pandemic caused by COVID-19 has impacted so many Canadians in so many ways and I can’t in good conscience allow cholesterol levels to also be impacted,” continued Mr. Kenney.
